About Australian LGBT Ice Hockey
Australian LGBT Ice Hockey was created to engage the large numbers of existing LGBT+ community members in the sport while also supporting new LGBT+ players and fans.
Initially formed by a number of Melbourne players, the idea expanded Australia-wide after discussions with interstate players also interested in the idea.
In March 2019 we formed Australia’s first LGBT+ inclusive club in Melbourne, the Southern Lights Ice Hockey Club, with Sydney’s Harbour Lights Ice Hockey Club launching in early 2021. Over coming seasons we hope to help players in other parts of Australia form their own inclusive teams.
We know the positive effects that sport, team activities and community can have on physical and mental wellbeing, and we strive to create a safe space for the LGBT+ community where they are supported and free of any negative experiences.
Ice hockey currently has participants from all parts of the LGBT+ community around Australia. The community is accepting, close-knit and passionate about the sport, and loves to welcome both new and experienced hockey players and fans to join them. If you’re not from Melbourne or Sydney, we’d love to hear from you!
